Prompt: Strength.

Agen Kolar

Growing up surrounded by few Zabraks and a majority of other species, mostly humans, made Agen all too aware of how much stronger than most he is. When he was a child, he did get into trouble a few times for 'playing too rough' with the other kids even though, by his own standards, he was being pretty gentle. Anything gentler than that and he wasn't really having fun. So, he stopped playing with other kids, except Quinlan, because Quinlan didn't mind roughousing.

Ailyn Vel

Ailyn is pretty strong. She has a pretty muscular body build because she's been impersonating her father since age 16 and she's got to look the part to play the part, so she's trained and worked out to achieve that. Having to carry bounties -dead and alive- around also played a hand in her getting buff.

Luke Skywalker

What do you get when you mix a farmer who is also a mechanic in a desert planet with no access to forklifts + the force? A very strong bastard, that's for sure. Even as a little guy, Luke was packing machinery and crates around like nothing.

Medrit Vasur

People make the mistake of underestimating Medrit's strength just because he chose a different career than bounty hunting, but he's pretty strong. He has spent his whole life working in a farm, in mines, and as a blacksmith. On top of that, he has soldier training from his time at the imperial academy. So he's pretty strong.

Obi-Wan Kenobi

Obi-Wan is pretty strong. There are few people that remember this and those who do know don't speak about it, but for a good part of his life, Obi-Wan was considered the brawn of his friend group. Bant is emotionally intelligent, Garen is very good with technology and socializing, and Obi-Wan was just there to pick them both up and out of harm's way. He once got in big trouble for beating up another youngling for insulting him, calling him Oafy-Wan.

Voe

She was always the brawn of the Padawans under Luke's wing at the Jedi school. While she could be quite stubborn and get into all kinds of brawls —9 times out of 10 with Ben Solo—, she used her strength to help others more often than she got into intense sparring matches with Ben, and was there to help pull him, and any other Padawan, out of danger whenever she could.

Do you read? maybe you could share some true crime book recommendations?

Yeah, I read quite a bit. If you’re interested in reading about true crime, I recommend you look into some of these: 

1. James Kolar’s ‘Foreign Faction’ (Jonbenet Ramsay case) - The author was actually assigned to the case, so there’s a lot in this book that demonstrates that he knows a lot (and I mean classified information/not known to the public) about the case. Since the case is unsolved, he entertains a lot of theories and shows how some is more realistic than others. He really gets into the forensic aspects of this case and delves into the alleged sexual assault that occur to the victim (which most books don’t seem to bring up tbh). In general, this case is probably one of the most fascinating unsolved crime because there are so many pieces of evidence but when you put it all together, something just doesn’t add up.

2. Vincent Bugliosi’s ‘Helter Skelter’ (Manson Family) - the writer is the prosecuting attorney of this case and he gets straight to the point tbh. I’m a fan of the pacing of this book, it doesn’t drag at all, it details the facts in a way that most will find easy to keep up with and his personal perspective on this case is pretty interesting. I’m gonna lie though, since this book does include interviews with Manson and the family members, it may be a disturbing read to some. 

3. Richard Llyod’s ‘People Who Eat Darkness’ (Lucie Blackman case) - so very little happens in this case but when you look at all the information carefully, there’s a lot to unpack. It’s a really long book but trust me, you’ll get through this so quickly cause it’s such page turner! Also if you have a certain interest in the Japanese justice system and their culture, this one is definitely for you. 

4. Ann Rule’s ‘Stranger Besides Me’ (Ted Bundy case) - ok, so this book gets a bit of mixed-reviews amongst readers but I enjoyed it. I think this is such a personal and raw account of Ted Bundy; the author really captured both sides of him as Ted Bundy the serial killer and Ted Bundy the charismatic, attractive, intelligent law student. It’s especially a gripping read to me because it really shows how skilled of a manipulator he was and how easily they can manipulate us to think in a certain way. 

5. Douglas Preston’s ‘The Monster of Florence’ - the basis of this case is alone is horrifying. I can’t really say much without giving things away, so I’ll just tell you guys that the writing of this is amazing, the narrative totally flips towards the end, it plays with your prior reservation about this case and challenges your perception on law enforcement. 

6. Jason Moss’ ‘The Last Victim’ - I’m pretty hesitant to recommend this but it’s such a fantastic, gripping yet disturbing read that I can’t help but include it in this list anyway. Basically the author starts off corresponding with a handful of serial killers during college as a part of a school project. He got in contact with particular notorious serial killer and it starts to really screw with his head. I wouldn’t start reading this book on a whim without first doing a brief search to make sure that you can handle the content, because this book definitely made plenty of people uncomfortable.

Interview with Joy Downer

We had the pleasure of interviewing Joy Downer over Zoom video! 

“Joy Downer, she’s not a downer at all,” says Joy when asked to describes herself. Her debut album Paper Moon was written and recorded with her husband JeffreyDowner in their home studio in Los Angeles over the last three years, the couple drew from a wide range of inspiration from Broadway musicals to disco to punk rock.

Joy Downer, born Joy Bishop, grew up as one of 10 kids raised in the Mormon/LDS Church in Jamul, CA. “We lived in a pink house with blue carpet, perched on the top of a hill, with fruit trees and horses,lots of dirt to ride bikes,and a trampoline to get hurt on constantly.” Music was a big part of her upbringing. She often found her Mom playing the piano and listening to musicals while her Dad, a drummer in high school, loved playing Beatles songs and listening to classic rock roll and country. No longer a member of the church, she fondly recalls nearly everyone playing instruments and singing and credits those early years of childhood for her love of music.

In grade school, Joy used songwriting as a tool to help her remember things.“It seemed to be the only way I could retain information,” said Joy. “I would also write about my feelings of depression, though I didn’t know what depression was at the time,and with no one to open up to about what I was feeling, music was my only form of therapy.” As she got older her songs became more romantically themed.

Joyrecollects sharing one of these early compositions with her high school boyfriend and, “he suggested I sell my songs to ‘a real singer like Britney Spears.’”

During her Senior year of high school, Joy was homeschooled so she could devote more time to her modeling career,which for eight years afforded her the chance to travel and live all over the world, including Australia, London, and Los Angeles before landing in NewYork City. While living in New York in 2008, Joy took up an invitation from her brother, Jon Bishop– a member of the band CrashEncore and a DJ at the forefront of the Southern California techno scene – to come visit him in San Diego, where he was recording with his band.

After landing,Joy met her brother at Capricorn Studios.“Inside the live room playing some really beautiful guitar sat Jeffrey,my brother’s new best friend,”Joy recalls of the day she first crossed paths with her husband and partner in life, JeffreyDowner. They played her a new song they'd been working on, and Joy immediately heard a melody which the two encouraged her to track,marking her first-ever studio recording. It was a short trip back to NYC beforeJoy was summoned back by Jon and Jeffrey to continue collaborating with them on the album.This was a turning point in Joy’s life.

Upon her return to San Diego, Joy was supposed to move in with her brother, only to discover that he’d found a roommate. To Joy and Jeffrey’s surprise, Jon suggested that she stay with Jeffrey. “The joke here is that I moved in and never moved out,” said Joy. Jeffrey and Joy eventually moved to Los Angeles, so she could get back into modeling while the couple would continue to make music. The city proved expensive, andJoy and Jeffreyfound themselves working multiple jobs just to make ends meet – putting music on the back burner for the next six years.

“In 2015I said, screwit! I’m quitting all my jobs and spending six months working on music! I did just that,” explains Joy. Her debut solo EP Radio Dreamer– recorded with producer Rob Kolar (Kolars,Lemon Sun) – soon followed in 2017.Rob hit the road with his own band, and Joy, ready to work on her debut LPPaper Moon, made the decision to work at home with Jeffrey. “We’ve had the opportunity to really strengthen and hone in on our musical capabilities,” said Joy of working with her husband.

Bringing the album full circle to where her love affair with music began,Joy felt it was important to include her family members on the LP. “I sampled voicemails from both my Mom and Dad, had my Mom play piano,had my brother Jon sing and play guitar at the end,and my sister Jaime played some harmonium. There’s even the song I started writing at age 17,that I didn’t‘sell to a real singer like Britney Spears,’ which is the opening track ‘A Song You’dNever Want to Hear.’ Each song sort of catalogs my current mindset/feelings and is still my form of therapy. I wrote most of my songs in a stream of consciousness way,so if I’m asked what they mean,I’m often still trying to figure that out myself. So I would say: whatever it means to you, that’s  what it means.”
